Hamilton Reeds at Dusk: Creating this Hamilton Original Painting

Original oil painting depicting Hamilton Ontario waterfront at dusk. Art hung over couch.

There’s something undeniably special about Hamilton’s landscapes. From beautiful waterfronts to wooded ravines, we have it all. This Hamilton original painting, titled “Hamilton Reeds at Dusk,” captures a scene near the Desjardins Recreation Trail looking toward Burlington Bay that I found particularly captivating.

Inspiration strikes

A landscape image of Hamilton Bay in the winter time at dusk.

I don’t always go out with a specific image in mind for a painting. Sometimes, like with this painting, inspiration strikes when I least expect it. I was on a walk along the Desjardin Recreation Trail which connects from the Waterfront Trail in March just before the sun began to set. The tall grass swaying gently in the breeze, the sunlight dappling the water’s surface – it all came together to create a scene that begged to be remembered.

The underpainting

As with most of my landscapes, this Hamilton original painting began with an underpainting. This initial layer helps me establish the composition and values of the artwork. During this stage, I wasn’t sure how I would depict the cattails in my signature style, but I always come back to a guiding principle: capturing the darkest darks and lightest lights. Paying particular attention to the horizon line was crucial, as it would anchor the entire artwork.

Bringing this Hamilton landscape to life

Once the underpainting was dry, I could begin building depth. I started with the foreground, which while contains a lot of detail, my goal wasn’t to paint each piece of grass. I wanted to give the essence of grass.

I then moved onto the background, focusing on capturing the hazy quality of the distant shoreline.

Last, I painted the sky. This sky needed movement and excitement to pull the work together.

Throughout this process, I kept in mind the importance of light and shadow. The way light interacts with its surroundings is what truly brings a scene to life, and I wanted to create a sense of depth and dimension in this painting.

A sense of peace

More than just a depiction of a place, this Hamilton original painting is an attempt to capture a feeling. The stillness of the water, the gentle swaying of the grass – it all evokes a sense of tranquility that I hope resonates with you.
