I recently had the pleasure of being asked to participate in the DVSA 10th Anniversary Little Black Frame Mystery Art Night. I chose to paint a small oil painting of Bayfront Park in Hamilton, Ontario. I had a hard time letting this little painting go. There was something about the subtly of the colours and the texture of the paint I truly enjoyed. I hope whoever selected this work also feels that way!
One of the things I loved in this painting was the decision to forego traditional matting. Instead, I extended the white paint right up to the edge of the painting, creating a seamless, textured look. This approach allowed me to draw attention to the painting itself and its unique details.
Another element I appreciated was the visibility of the pencil outline and underpainting. These subtle details peeked through the layers of oil paint, adding depth and character to the final work.
This little painting was a joy to create. By removing the matting, I stepped outside my comfort zone and experimented with new techniques. As a result, I created a painting that I love.
Bayfront Park, finished painting

The finished oil painting of Bayfront Park in Hamilton, Ontario, is a reflection of the relaxing nature of that moment. The muted colour palette is dominated by blues, greys, and hints of yellow. This combination makes it a versatile painting. It can enhance any home decor.
